Introduction
Charles Darwin’s theory was first introduced to the Chinese society by Fu Yen in 1897 through translating Thomas Henry Huxley’s book entitled Evolution and Ethics. In addition to translate selected sections of the book, Yen also offered his own interpretation of Darwin’s theory. Despite Yen is a respected scholar, his book has little impact on the Chinese biologists and most of us only learn it by name. Darwin’s theory was appreciated among Taiwanese biologists in recsent decades by several distinguished biologists in the 60s. Most scientists in the field of evolutionary biology were influenced by scholars in the States or in European countries. On the year of bicentennial of Charles Darwin’s birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of the 'On the Origin of Species', we have organized a series of Darwin 200 events at National Taiwan University to honor Charles Darwin’s scientific contribution and to introduce evolutionary biology programs/ activities/ scientific achievements in Taiwan. In addition, we have also invited scientists in this field to share their experiences or recsent findings in the field of evolutionary biology.
